How To Choose The Right Quinceanera Dress

By Miranda Sanchez

A Quinceanera is a celebration of a young girl and the recognition of her journey from childhood to maturity. It is a custom in all Latino cultures. This special event is similar to a Sweet 16 party.

The young woman should wear a gown to compliment this special occasion. It is important to choose the perfect dress for your figure. Here are some tips that will help you decide.

Color: Think about the color and style that suits your personality. Traditional colors are white, blue or pink. You can also choose other pastel colors or a white gown with radiant beading.

Design: Reflect on the design that complements your body type. Since this is a Quinceanera celebration your gown should be full length. There is a list of body types below:

Apple Body Type: You can wear empire waistlines with v-neck design. This will cover the big waistline and the v-cut neckline creates sharper and a less round body. Don't wear designs with corset skirts that crisscross in the middle area. You should also avoid wearing full skirts and elongated bodices because these designs create a bigger waistline image.

Pear Shape: To create a balance in the upper and lower area of your body wear puffy or padded gowns in th shoulder area. Don't pick hugging styles, narrow shoulders or puffy skirts. This design will make you appear bigger.

Hourglass Type: With this body type don't wear a gown that has too much decoration or a full skirt. This will only bring attention to your hip area. To create a balance for your body structure, a style with a V neck with off the shoulder sleeves will look better.

Square Body Type: For young ladies with this body type, you should consider wearing gowns with beaded necklines and full skirts. You can also go for the padded and oversized shoulder designs because it can create an illusion of shape or curve in the body. On the other hand, avoid clothes that are fitting to the body.

Inverted Pear: A young lady with this body type will look beautiful in a gown that has simple sleeves with a full skirt.

You should also consider how comfortable you are going to feel in your gown. When the Quinceanera goes to mass she has the option of wearing a shawl so she feels more comfortable going into church. After the program starts she can remove the shawl.

At the reception there is mostly dancing. So it would be wise not to wear a strapless gown. You can end up in an embarrassing situation pulling it up all night. If you still want a strapless dress make sure you get it fitted by a professional seamstress.

Closing Note: The Quinceanera should wear a gown for her body type so that she is comfortable throughout the whole night. - 15366
