After returning from the store, I dug up some numbers that shocked me. Here's one that really left an impression: the average Anthropologie shopper spends 80 minutes in the store per trip. That's an incredible figure that should describe a bit about the feel of the stores.

How the Christening Gown came to be

Prior to the seventeenth century, newborn babies were carried to the font in a "bearing cloth" and wrapped tightly in swaddling clothes. The bearing cloth was a large square piece of silk with gold lace and braid trimmings.

As we now know it as the "Christening Robe"; it evolved when babies were freed of swaddling at a younger age in the mid-eighteenth century. The earliest example to survive were made of white silk and consisted of a front opening which could be fastened with ribbon ties or left open to reveal a petticoat underneath. Like the women's gowns of the period, the robe had similar decorative curving lines of braid.

Made in the same style as every day eighteenth century boys and girls, the first Christening robes wore worn by both boys and girls. Boys and girls wore "slip" dresses; these dresses had a very long flowing skirt which fell from a short bodice and a low neck and short sleeves. Other items such as bonnets and bootees could be made to go with the robe. A number of exquisite Christening sets survived from the seventeenth and eighteenth century, these included bibs, mittens, pincushion covers, head bands and handkerchiefs in embroidered linen.

Victorian babies were dressed in gowns which were beautifully decorated with Ayrshire work. Ayrshire is an exquisite form of white-on-white embroidery that originated in the Scottish Lowlands.

An old Scottish custom involved pinning a piece of shortbread to the Christening robe, to be worn throughout the ceremony. An unmarried girl who ate the shortbread after wards was sure to dream of her future husband that night. It was also thought essential for the baby to sleep in its Christening robe for the first night after baptism, to bring luck and good health in the future.

The same fashion has remained popular for Christenings ever since. This is partly due to the tradition of handling Christening robes down from one generation to the next, so that dozens of babies may wear the same gown over many years.

When using this chart to determine size, look for pants which will fit with the larger measurement (between your waist and hips). For instance, if your waist is 95 centimetres and your hips 127 centimetres, you'll need size 22. You should always measure your hips at their widest point. For example, if the tops of your thighs are wider than your hips, then you'll want to measure yourself there to make sure you get a good fit. Shorter women can wear pants which feature vertical stripes to give the illusion of height and make their legs appear longer. For long legged women, bell bottoms may be a good choice.

When you use your exact measurements to purchase pants, you'll find that you have better luck finding the right fit to flatter your figure. Just make certain that you take the measurements in your normal relaxed mode. A Historical Look at the Necktie

Yet it was not until the middle of the 19th Century that we begun to see the introduction of neckties that look like those we wear today.

Through this article we will take you through some of the stages of the development of neckties in their various forms. Yes there are images of the ancient Egyptian's, Romans and Chinese wearing cloth around their necks but many of these would not resemble what we see as a necktie worn today.

It was during the Thirty Years War which took place between 1618 and 1648 the first kinds of neckties were being worn by Croatian Mercenaries. But what they wore was in fact a small neckerchief knotted around the neck and was seen by Parisians who then decided to use this as a fashion accessory and was worn by both men and women.

It was in the latter part of the 17th Century that a new neck wear item became fashionable with men namely the lace cravat. Which not only needed a lot of time and effort being spent on arranging it and in order to help keep it in place string would be used to secure it.

It was when the Battle of Steenkerque was taking place that the young princes involved did not have time to spend on arranging their cravats correctly. Instead what they chose to do was wind them around the neck several times and then twist the two loose ends together. These ends would then be passed through a jacket buttonhole to ensure that the cravat stayed in place during the battle. Although they did not look like the neckties of modern times they were a precursor to them and were more commonly known as Steinkirks.

Through the next 100 years or so the cravat was replaced by the stock, which was originally some muslin cloth that be folded into a narrow band and which then would be wound around the collar of a shirt a few times. However, although stocks remained prevalent towards the end of the 18th Century the cravat began to make a return and was being worn by young Englishmen and Frenchmen.

But what really brought around the creation of the modern necktie was the industrial revolution which occurred throughout the late part of the 19th Century and the early part of the 20th Century. Men working were looking for something to wear which was not only comfortable, can be put on easily but would last throughout the whole day.

It was during this part of the history of the necktie that the long thin design was introduced which was easy for any man to knot. However it was a New York tie maker who came up with the necktie that has more elasticity to it which meant the tie would return to its original shape after being taken off.
